sushi + photos + bridges = Tri-Hearts for Tri-Cities

March 14, 2012

Even though I technically live in the Tri-Cities TV market (although I like to think that the Tri-Cities is actually in the Yakima TV market ;) ), I rarely make the 1-hour drive down there. I actually go to Seattle way more often, despite the fact that the drive to the West side is almost twice the distance.

As I mentioned in a recent post, KIMA made the switch to the new Facebook timeline format, and I took some photos of Yakima for the cover picture. Our Tri-Cities sister station, KEPR, also made the switch, but didn’t have any ‘pro’ pictures to use for the cover photo.

The same week we made the switch, my friends happened to be planning a trip down to the Tri-Cities for a church event, and I decided it would be fun after all to tag along so I could maybe do some shopping and take some photos for the KEPR Facebook page. Not to mention, there were talks of eating sushi at a new kaiten sushi (conveyor belt sushi) place (!) there. Opportunities for sushi and photography? The stereotypical Asian inside me was leaping for joy, and I could not resist.

It was an adventure trying to find the prime spots to take pictures of the iconic bridges without having a clue as to where anything was in the area. I ended up finding a lovely bike trail that went along the Columbia River with excellent views of both the Blue and Cable bridges. It was refreshing to be able to enjoy a nice walk outside. I definitely needed it that day. And yes, I recommend Mizu Sushi & Roll (although I could get into how the sushi wasn’t the pure, unadulterated Japanese sushi that I love, and was very much “flavored-up” for American tastebuds… Regardless, it was delicious, different and decently-priced).

At one point during my walk, I must have startled some birds because three Canadian Geese suddenly flew out from a nearby ditch and scared the crap out of me. Luckily, I pulled myself together in time to get a few shots. The picture looks fake!

While I have a subconscious inclination to detest the Tri-Cities because I’ve been trained to avoid anything and everything Tri-Cities in my Yakima-focused newscasts, for at least one weekend, I was able to make a little room in my heart for the unintentionally-banned part of Central Washington.

Now that I found a decent sushi place closer than two hours away and a lovely place to enjoy walks, I have more reason to head east instead of west!

But please don’t misunderstand me. None of it was good enough to replace my love for Yakima.
