Winter is and isn’t the most ideal time to visit Rome: If you hate crowds (like me), winter travel is great, but you will have to deal with a lot of scaffolding covering famous landmarks as this off season is also the ideal time to do restoration and maintenance work. If you imagine romantically enjoying a gelatto while sitting near Trevi Fountain, you’ll have to be ok with trading the sound of water for the clanging of construction workers. You might, however, be able to enjoy a view not every tourist gets to enjoy, like walking over one of the most famous fountains in the world via a temporary bridge.
